About the Event
In conversation with host Chenjerai Kumanyika (Uncivil), audio producers and journalists share their experiences covering local police violence when those stories make worldwide headlines. How does the explosion of a national and international movement impact local reporting? How do local reporters contend with, adjust to, and work within the reality of a sudden spotlight on their communities? And what happens to communities when the national attention fades? Host Chenjerai Kumanyika will guide the conversation, exploring what dominant narratives get right or wrong about the story of each community, how local reporters have disrupted or reproduced traditional police reporting, and how we can all better understand media narratives around past, current, and future patterns of state violence.
